Funny Friday – Discworld mania

YES! The day had come to finally praise Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. There are one of the books I wish EVERYONE to read. At least some of them! And at least once ;).

In all, there are 41 books in this series plus several shorter stories and some companion books (like The Science of Discworld). I know, it’s a lot to handle, but they swallow you so easily you won’t even know when you’re reading the next story!

If you’ll check on my Goodreads page you’ll see I’ve marked only 17 books as “read” but it’s only because I’ve read some of them before I even knew Internet was fun :P. Well, just kidding, but It certainly was a while ago and since I don’t remember each and every story so well I’ve decided to only mark the ones I do.

Sometimes you simply can’t go on

There comes the time when you simply have to give up on some books. These two I’m going to mention beat me, I simply couldn’t go on and here are the reasons why. Both of these are graphic novels, so I even looked the books through to see how it will all end, how will the action follow. I can’t say I’ve lost much without reading them thoroughly.

I received both of these books from the publisher via NetGalley.

Terminal Hero The death and life of Rory FletcherTerminal Hero: The death and life of Rory Fletcher by Peter Milligan, Piotr Kowalski

I’m really sad I didn’t like this one especially since on of the authors is of Polish origins.

What did I like about this story? Well, not much. The beginning was good enough, even if not original. The guy who’s going to die get’s a chance to live, but he gets some superpowers he can’t fully control. Not only that, but he goes totally mental. Government or some secret agency are trying to use him, but he escapes and tries to live a normal life for a while. Unfortunately, the experimental medicine that “cured” him was used on other two people who rather like to wraith havoc. Continue reading “Sometimes you simply can’t go on”

Fight after death

Let me tell you one thing about this graphic novel – it’s AWESOME! I loved it! I Loved everything in it – the story, the characters, the occasional humor, the graphic, the idea. Fantastic!

I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Goodreads blurb:

Gifted? Join the Death Vigil in their ongoing war against the ever-growing power of the Primordial Enemy! Only catch is you have to die first. Become a corporeal immortal Death Knight and obtain reality-altering weaponry in the never-ending battle between good and evil.

That blurb should already make you curious enough to check this novel out. Death Vigil has everything a good graphic novel should have –  likable and energetic characters, proper villain, interesting story, well-placed humor and good visual presentation of it all.

Oh, and if you still have doubts, you can check the first pages on artist’s DeviantArt account: http://nebezial.deviantart.com/gallery/47267490/death-vigil.

This story is packed with interesting characters: Continue reading “Fight after death”

Grimm Fairy Tales episode 8

This week has a mix of stories that just got into my top 10 favorite Grimm tales and the ones that made no sense.

Fairytale by t1na

In today’s episode:

  1. The Little Old Lady
  2. The Devil With the Three Golden Hairs
  3. The Louse and the Flea
  4. The Girl Without Hands
  5. Clever Hans

I’m afraid I will spoil every other tale for you. The first one is very short and it’s hard to get to the point without telling too much. The third and fifth tales were one of the WTF-just-happened tales and even though I will tell you what happened, maybe you should just read them and tell me that they actually do make sense.

The Little Old Lady

Let’s start with a rather peaceful tale from the “Children’s legends” section. The old lady is a story of a woman who lived for very long and had seen many of her friends and family die. When the last person she loved passed away she was very depressed. One day when she was walking through town she heard church bells calling for mass. She was surprised because it wasn’t the time for it.

When she goes into the church she sees everyone who she loved and cared for and who passed away. She also sees a scene of something that might have happened if some of those people haven’t died when they did. Continue reading “Grimm Fairy Tales episode 8”
