Oh look, another Top 5 Wednesday! It’s been two months since I did one of these and there are plenty books to list on this one, but as usual – five is the limit (more or less). And since I want to actually stay within the limit, I’ll only mention Science Fiction books because my list of these is way shorter than Fantasy :D.
5. Hover by Melissa West
It’s about time I’ve read this one – a sequel to the book I’ve read years ago and really enjoyed. It has aliens, some romance and thrilling adventure (I hope).
4. Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
This one has been staring at me for ages. I still can’t get into reading it, even though I want to. I think it’s the fandom because let’s face it – it’s not easy to step into one sometimes and for some reason, this one bothers me. Maybe I should start with the movie?
3. Golden Son by Pierce Brown
I have a feeling my list is mostly about sequels 😛 and here’s another one I should read, am I right? You’ve read it? You know it’s awesome? I’ve seen some of your reviews, so don’t deny it! It actually seems like some people like it more than the first book.
2. Sword & Laser Anthology by various authors
OK… I did remember about this book’s existence, really, I did! I just… well ok, I forgot, but now I have a strange urge to read it. Maybe not right away, but it’s definitely on my short list.
1. Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel
The first book was surprisingly great and I really want to know what will happen next and who is this mysterious narrator/interviewer because it really bugs me :). And happy news – it’s on NetGalley, so I actually will read it! I just need to find a moment to start.

Definitely don’t watch the Ender’s Game movie before reading the book… or if you do, stop halfway through! 🙂 The movie was good but it ruined the ending. The ending is one of the most awesome things about the book – it surprised me and left me with a great feeling, whereas in the movie I just thought: what?? (my friend who’s never read the book was watching it with me had a similar “well that was good until that ending” reaction). Plus you do miss a lot of the interesting psychological stuff in the movie, simply because it’s impossible to convey it in a film. Anyway, I’m generally more of a book-before-movie fan myself so that probably influences me, but this is one book I’m particularly glad I read it before watching the movie.

I also prefer book before movie approach, but sometimes I just can’t get into reading something. Maybe I’ll get the audiobook.

Yeah that’s understandable, I have that with a lot of books too. I actually listened to the audiobook of Ender’s Game instead of reading it, and I loved it, so I can recommend the audiobook!

Don’t give up on Ender’s Game, it’s actually my favorite book ever!!! I love depth it gives its characters, and Ender’s comparative innocence really digs at what the Fleet forced him to sacrifice. As far as the movie, I give it a B; it was fun for the special effects and to see the Battle Room but it just can’t convey the psychological undertones and intelligence of the genius children it’s depicting. Plus, it leaves out the entire geopolitical subplot of what his siblings do on Earth (which is fodder for the whole Ender’s Shadow series) while he’s at Battle School.

Movies are like that unfortunately. I just thought it might be like a nice teaser for me.

Plot wise it does stay pretty true to the book, so it’d probably be good for that! There’s just one moment that they did a complete 180 on the tone, like the book vs. movie Dumbledore “DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE???” What can you do, though? 😉

I’m finally reading the 4th Percy Jackson book and I wonder what they might break in the movie this time, because the Sea of Monsters movie was waaaay off.

I’ve never read Ender’s Game– but I don’t really like aliens

The aliens aren’t the focus of Ender’s Game, they’re preparing to fight them but the interactions with the aliens are largely from the extremely distant perspective of spaceships on a battlefield.

I had to read Ender’s Game a while ago for English class and I was bored out of my mind. Everyone else in my group seemed to enjoy it but I don’t even think I ever finished it.

well, I’d have to skip several series and books I liked if I tracked what the authors did, some of them do rather stupid things, so I’m trying to stay away from this kind of news most of the time

Yeah, same. A lot of people put it in their reviews so as long as you don’t let that effect your enjoyment of the book you’ll probably end up enjoying it. I still don’t understand why I was never able to finish it because everyone else seemed to love it.
