BBC Halloween special

BBC_Radio_logo Look at that it’s already Sunday. But the good thing is – I’ve got a free day tomorrow! No Monday this week :D. It’s even better when you’ll think about this stupid time change (although I did sleep an hour longer today and I really needed that).

Anyway, I’ve promised you some creepy BBC stories and here they come. Some will be available today evening or even tomorrow, but hey, at least you’ll have something to look forward to!

1. Concrete Island by J.G. Ballard

This was the first story by Ballard I’ve heard and damn that creeped me out. It seems so surreal and yet like something that might actually happen! Freaky. It’s not a horror, it’s a thriller that will get into your head and stay there. Beware of the motorways ;).

Driving home one Friday rush hour, a cocky young architect crashes down a motorway embankment. At first he seems bound to be rescued, but as he fails to make the passing commuters notice him, he finds himself trapped on a strange, neglected island between the highways. Can this modern day Crusoe survive in a strange new world?

This story was a part of Dangerous Visions BBC series, so you might’ve listened to it already.

2. Fright Night stories

BBC’s special series of “Dramas to disturb and delight”. You might know these stories already from books or even movies, but here’s the BBC version – some short, some longer, all creepy enough to give you goosebumps:

Cookie Jar by Stephen King

BBC Episode 1 | Episode 2 | Episode 3
Days left to listen: 24 | Duration: 15 minutes per episode

The Mirror by Kate Mosse

BBC Link | Days left to listen: 27 | Duration: 15 minutes

The Rat King by John Connolly

BBC LinkΒ  | Days left to listen: 28 | Duration: 15 minutes

Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin

BBC Link | Days left to listen: 29 | Duration: 2 hours

The Stone Tape by Matthew Graham, Peter Strickland

BBC Link | Days left to listen: 29 | Duration: 1 hour

Ring by Koji Suzuki

BBC Link | Days left to listen: 30 – airing tomorrow | Duration: 1 hour

3. The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham

If you’re in need of another creepy story about children and aliens then this is a perfect choice for you. Wyndham has a gift for strange tales, reading (or listening to) one of his stories is never a disappointment.

The mystery deepens when all the residents of the rural village of Midwich suddenly fall into a state of unconsciousness…

BBC Episode 1 | Episode 2 | Episode 3
Days left to listen: 26 | Duration: 30 minutes per episode
The adaptation lasts for only 1,5 hour, so even if it contains the essence of the story I’d suggest you read the full book after this drama (or instead).

4. Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu

What could be a better story to for a Halloween night than a vampire tale? Carmilla is not your usual kill-them-all vampire tale. I loved the mood of the tale, the uncertainty and tension.

Laura is a lonely girl living in a solitary castle in the south east of Austria.
Into her life comes the beautiful and mysterious Carmilla, with whom Laura strikes up, what will prove to be, a dangerous friendship…

BBC Episode 1 | Days left to listen: 30 – airing today | Duration: 45 minutes

Scary listening to you all!
