It is so hard to pick just one book from your favorite genre. And it’s hard to choose just 5 genres too apparently, but I guess these will have to do. Maybe these aren’t the perfect choices, but I love these books and I think they might make good starters :).
5. Fairytale retellings
Enchanted by Alethea Kontis – A cute and cuddly story that I loved. Maybe it’s more of a fairy tale itself rather than a retelling, but it has plenty of elements from more and less known tales.
It’s romantic, very nice and easy to read and it has some great characters.
4. Paranormal / Fantasy
Storm Front by Jim Butcher – because I really like this quirky wizard and I love these books. What’s so great about this series? The characters! Well, that was the obvious one :P. There’s also the world that is almost like our own, but with all the scary monsters, supernatural beings and obviously wizards. There’s action, there’s humor and there’s a good plot that continues throughout the series.
3. Dystopia / Postapocalyptic
Angelfall by Susan Ee – why this one and not one of the all-famous books? Because I feel it’s underappreciated and I loved it. It has angels! And not your usual nice, calm, helpful and pretty kind (well, maybe pretty is accurate). These guys can wreck havoc and it’s exactly what they did. Now people are trying to survive and maybe kick back a bit. I really enjoyed this book.
2. Graphic novels
Death Vigil by Stjepan Šejić – One of my favorite graphic novels! It’s basically about grim reapers fighting monsters, but it looks great, it reads great and I simply love it.
But I have to admit if I were to choose a graphic novel for a person who had never read one I’d probably go either for “Saga” or “Thorgal”.
1. Fantasy / Epic
Soooo many to choose from! I this is my favorite genre of all times. I love the epic adventures, fantastical creatures, magic, well-developed characters, new worlds to dive into. All of it!
Anyway, for today I’d recommend The Magicians’ Guild by Trudi Canavan – a great first book filled with magic, fantastic plot, and interesting characters.
Bonus – Manga
Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto – well, since I had a manga-mania lately, I couldn’t just let it pass :D. And yes, I think Naruto is awesome and you should try it out! There are plenty mangas I love, but this one is kind of special. It has super-powered ninja’s, fun graphic, well-placed humor and plenty of action.
Aaaand something I’ll probably get lynched for, but… I would join manga and graphic novels in one go, because I do think they are one and the same – the only difference being the style, but I wanted to give a shout to Naruto :P. So go on, shout at me in comments how I’m behaving like a heretic. I. Don’t. Care.
Tell me what books of your favorite genre/genres would you recommend to others?
Heretical! haha! I 100% agree, graphic novels, comic books, manga are the same thing. But, just to be annoying, it’s not style that makes them different, it’s actually about “where it was written” and “who it was written for”.
Anyhoo… I agree, Naruto is a great starter manga! I’m planning on re-reading through the entire series in October.

Haha 🙂 I managed to find more parts after vol 20 (it’s kind of hard to buy vol 1-50 right now) so I’ll probably add another Naruto reading for the new month 😀

Storm Front and Angelfall were both great books. I really liked the depiction of the mother’s mental illness and the stress it placed on the family in Angelfall. Storm Front was just a good mindless read.

I love fairy tale retellings – my favorite to date is The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani. I love the world, the original spin on good and evil in fairy tales, and the two main characters. Have you read this book? I need to read book two and three – currently they are hating me from my bookshelf… ☺

It’s been on my TBR list for ages! Somehow I can’t get myself to buy & read it, but one day I will :). I heard good things about it.

I loved it, it has a really unique take on regular fairy tales. Very fun to read.
