I think I had a reading crisis yesterday. Or maybe it was a realistic thinking that got me to the decision that it’s about time to give up one few of the books I’ve been “reading” forever. Maybe I have enough of pretending, or maybe I hope that saying “enough” will give me a kick start to read some more interesting books because this month was a very un-bookish. True, I had plenty or things to do including 2 parties to prepare, some post-renovation cleanup, etc etc.
Anyway, here are some books I’m currently putting on the dreadful DNF shelf. They aren’t bad books, if they were I would’ve given up on them a long time ago, but it seems we just don’t get along very well.
A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest
started reading: 19-02-2013
pages: 297 (which is funny because I remember it being a 700+ page book)
How did I get it? From Amazon after checking out some Goodreads giveaway and being contacted by the author.
Thoughts: I’ve read a sample and some extra pages after buying the book, but somehow I put it down and never picked up again. I remember I really liked the main characters and I wanted to know how will the story progress.
It looks like the series is quite popular, so maybe one of you will give me a good enough reason to pick it up again? Or maybe a review you could link up?
Tir Na N’Og by Marni L.B. Troop

How did I get it? It was a kindle freebie
Thoughts: Again it’s an unexpected breakup. I liked the story, the magic, the setting. Maybe It was the romance that I didn’t care about? Or maybe I simply couldn’t get into the book because of writer’s style? It was rather well written, but it lacked excitement.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
by Robert Louis Stevenson

How did I get it? A free audiobook from SYNC
Thoughts: I have some unexplained issues with Stephenson’s writing style. His stories are good, adventurous. The ideas are creative and wonderful. But the writing style… it just kills my enthusiasm. The funny thing is – it was an audiobook! I didn’t even have to read it, just listen. But it made me sleepy just like Dracula, Secret Island, even Time machine.
The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea by Sebastian Junger

How did I get it? It was a part of audiobook bundle from Humble Bundle
Thoughts: I think I just picked up this book at the wrong time. It might be a good story, well written and exciting but it didn’t catch my attention.
Is it good? Should I pick it up again?
When the Siren Calls by Tom Barry

How did I get it? Yet another unfortunate Amazon story I bought. Well, look at the cover!
Thoughts: I think I was expecting something else from this book. It looks like it completely fell out of my genre and never got back to it. I think I wanted something magical with a bit of romance, what I got was an erotic story about a horny man and a broken woman… not my kind of reads.
Funny things are the ratings of this book on Goodreads – spread out almost equally from 2 to 5 stars, but with plenty 1-star reviews too.

I think I’ll stop now. I have few more books that went straight to the evil shelf, but I think I’ll leave them for some other time.

Magic of books 
I just DNFed a book as well. It feels really bad – I had promised a review. On the other hand, if I can’t get through it in over a year, it’s probably never going to happen. Leaving it on my reading shelf, just makes me feel anxious everytime I seem my shelf. So….

I have 3 books I’m struggling through just because I agreed to review them. I don’t think I’ll finish them, but I don’t want to give up just yet. I did have a bad reading month, maybe the new one will be better.

Sometimes life is funny and you just aren’t in the mood for a certain book. I just spent a plane ride completely into a book I’ve tried to read twice before and didn’t even make it through the first chapter. So indeed! The new month will be better!

Oh man I just got A Shade of Vampire yesterday because I kept seeing it pop up on my facebook with ‘stellar’ ratings so I was like, well if it’s THAT good then it must be good right?
I’m about halfway through and meh. I’ll put up a review probably today or tomorrow, depending on when I finish it. Even the ‘lengthened’ version is super short so it won’t take long.

I read somewhere that A Shade of Vampire sold over a million copies because of its low price point. I was really surprised. That’s a lot of books for a self pub author.

I’ve only seen the movie of the Perfect Storm and it was pretty good. But that was also probably because George Clooney is in it >.>

A friend has recommended A Perfect Storm to me and has offered to pass on the book when he’s finished. So I’ll give it a go.
I’ve never managed to read Dr Jekyll all the way through. But I have to say I really like some of Stevenson’s other works like Kidnapped and Catriona.

and yes, I know Stephenson had a gift and I do want to read some of his books. I’ve listened to some dramatizations and they were really interesting.
