Monthly summary – March ’16

winter

Finally the last month with winter picture :P. It’s true that weather varied this month, but it’s usual for March. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems to apply also to reading. I had good days and I had plenty days when I simply didn’t know what to read and I didn’t even want to.

In other words – I’ve read very little :/ This month was almost as bad as January 😛

So what did I accomplish in March?

  • I finished 15 books: 3 novels, 6 short stories, 1 audio, 5 graphic novels. Now this might not sound bad, but let’s see the page counts from the last months: January – 2085, February – 4288, March – 2351. See what I mean?
  • But, to make up for all the unread pages and unlistened hours of unabridged audio books, I’ve listened to plenty of BBC dramas. The best were Pilgrim and Neverwhere. If you missed them, you ought to feel sorry. But they might come back in a year or two.
  • I was approved for Maestro! I haven’t read Salvatore’s books in a while, but I loved them and Drizzt is one of my favorite characters! So excited!
Obviously, I’ve started reading it right away and completely dropped all other books, although it was hard to leave “Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem“.
  • I’ve got my hands on The Wicked + The Divine. I’ve read all three volumes at one go :D. Review to come, for now I’ll just tell you I’ve got a love-hate relationship with these stories. The hate comes with each cliffhanger after every freaking volume!
  • I’ve updated my 2016 Challenge page. It’s more or less current now and I had to change the Levels of acomplishement as I already exceeded the first level and that wasn’t the point :P. I might change them again later, but for now, well you can see yourself: 2016 reading challenge tracker
  • I re-watched Pirated of the Caribbean 😀 and all Harry Potter stories. I HATE Umbridge! I had to turn the movie off and move on to the next to cool down. I watched it few days later :P. It’s not like I’m missing on a story, I know it anyway.
  • I finished my Minecraft lighthouse, but I’m unable to show you the final image since our server is currently down. Here’s the close-to-the-end screenshot:

lighthouse

Yes, it’s purple. It was the easiest material to gather :D. After all I am building it in survival mode.

Favorite book of the month

MartianIt was AWESOME!!! Seriously! If you haven’t read it yet – you’re missing out.

It’s science-fiction, but it’s not about star battles, aliens, etc. It’s about a man trying to survive. A man with a great sense of humor. Yes, there are some science elements, some counting, etc, but it’s all entwined with the story and with Mark’s personality so well, that you’ll never be bored.

And the movie is great too 😀

Biggest disappointment

Pieces of HateIt was supposed to be a good story with pirates, demon, and some killing. Then I found out this copy includes the first story too – a western that annoyed me. And the Pieces of Hate story was actually a prequel.

I didn’t like it, but it did have some elements that were appealing.

All the other stories I’ve read:

I’ve arranged them from worst to best, as usual – links lead to my review posts or to Goodreads page.

The Adventures of Basil and Moebius, Volume 3 Secret of the Ancients Deadman's Hand Pieces of Hate Cursed A Reaper of Stone Broken Banners Peter and the Starcatchers Halfway dead The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 1 The Faust Act The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 2 Fandemonium The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 3 Commercial Suicide Diary of an AssCan A Mark Watney Short Story Martian

And the ones I gave up on:

Alice in Wonderland The Vampire SlayerI tried to finish it, but I got really bored. I admit I’m not a big fan of the original story, but I still like it. And most of the retellings I’ve read were good or great. This one was unoriginal and simply boring. It was a rewritten version of Caroll’s tale. Take some elements and replace them with vampires – that’s how it was written.

Currently reading / listening to:

Cutlass The Assassin's Blade Maestro Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem

Yeah, well… I did say I found it hard to concentrate on reading, right? You see the pirates books above? Yes, these are the same I was reading last month. I have finished few other stories, but these left untouched.

Working on reviews:

Except for the ones I’ve mentioned last week I’m adding these to my future posts:

Halfway dead Martian The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 1 The Faust Act The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 2 Fandemonium The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 3 Commercial Suicide

    1. I know they are. I’ve got the first one on huge promo, the second was borrowed 🙂 and the third I caught on Netgalley. Unfortunately with the third you can see it’s an arc. Some graphics look unfinished. But it’s still a good story.

Thank you so much for the endorsement, Magda! Seems to me you’ve accomplished quite a lot for one month, in spite of your denial.
I’m going to read ‘The Martian’ as soon as my memory of the excellent film has faded a bit.
